Skidmore Qualifies for World Triathlon Championships

RANDOLPH, NH- Meg Skidmore set a goal for herself to compete next year in the World Triathlon Championship in London. She was one of more than 1,000 triathletes who competed last week in the 2012 USA Triathlon Sprint National Championship, finishing 5th in her age group and earning a spot to represent her country on an international level.

Skidmore, 27, has been training intensely with Coach Steve Vosburgh to prepare for the ½ mile swim, 12.4 mile bike and 3.1 mile run course  distances  for this  triathlon and that training paid off in the Nationals. Skidmore finished with an overall time of 1:14:38, including clocking the fastest transition time in her age group for the 2nd leg. In such a large field it can be difficult to get a sense of where one is relative to the competition.

“I felt strong throughout the race, a few of us leapfrogged during the bike leg and all I thought was they could be 17th and 18th place. I couldn’t let them out of sight.  Coming into the run Steve was right there next to me telling me to settle in and I had my best run ever. Even finishing I had no idea of how many were ahead of me or if I had qualified,” Skidmore explained

After a nerve wracking 10 minutes, results were posted and Skidmore heard the news she had been waiting for: with only the top 18 in each age group qualifying, she had finished 5th and was going to London. It was a joyous moment for Meg and the 15 members of “Team Skidmore” who had accompanied her to Burlington for the event.

“It was overwhelming to know I had made the cut but even more so that I was 5th—I was physically and emotionally exhausted by the time I was finished. It still hasn’t sunk in that I will have a chance to represent my country on a international level!” said a clearly thrilled Skidmore.
